[Peter Manning] Wardening Tues 23 June 9:30-12:30. Warm and sunny with southerly breeze which seems to make for lots of people about, just about as many as I have seen on a Tuesday morning. I clocked 53 folk, around half I think just out for a stroll. Cattle all ok and standing, and moving around western fen quite quickly. They don't seem quite as docile as the ones the last couple of years, maybe they need to get more used to humans in green shirts approaching them! Plenty of small fast moving birds about (probably mostly Cettis) but did spot Tree Creeper, Reed Bunting and Blackcap that were a little slower. I also saw a circling bird of prey with what looked like a leather loop around its leg, not sure if this was an errant falconry bird or if it had just got something caught on its leg. Looked like a Buzzard wing from underneath, but not sure as it was as big as a Buzzard. Hundreds of 10mm fish in Fishlake stream. Saw (according to my book!) an Emperor and a Hairy Dragonfly and a number of different types of Damselfly, also some lovely flowers. One old chap described the warden's role quite well "supervising the wildlife"! Also positive comments about the 'passing places' on the permissive path.
